Susan Thompson

(Director Emeritus, 1987-2012) graduated with honors from Mt. Holyoke College with a B.A. in English and Dance. Her training included the study of ballet and modern with an emphasis on Cunningham technique. Susan performed professionally in Dance Circle of Boston, the New York/Dance Ensemble (NYC) & Southwest Ballet (New Mexico) where she was also Company Manager.  Susan was committed to making Bainbridge Dance Center a school known for artistic passion, technical excellence, integrity and intelligence.  Her commitment to arts education led beyond BDC, as she was a founding member of the Washington State Arts Commission Consortium, and helped create partnerships with the Bainbridge Island School District and Bainbridge Performing Arts.  She worked hard to foster a community where children and young adults can realize their full potential, a mission BDC continues to cherish.

Our educational mission is to provide a high level of age appropriate, professional dance training for students ages 4-18. Our goal is to teach dance from a technical standpoint while instilling in each student a healthy sense of self-esteem, a joy for learning, a broad basis for arts appreciation and a mutual sense of respect and cooperation. Dance education at our school develops skill in the significant areas of the physical, intellectual, emotional and social.

Performing Arts
All enrolled students participate in our annual school production, which is professionally staged, choreographed and designed to give dancers and audience members alike a fulfilling performance experience. BDC has also presented evenings of dance featuring faculty choreography and dancers, as well as collaborative projects with Bainbridge Performing Arts, including “The Snow Queen”, “Peter Pan”, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “Hansel & Gretel.” These programs encourage new artistic opportunities for both dancers and faculty.

Education Outreach
Bainbridge Dance Center is dedicated to the community and has developed an extensive outreach program of classes, lectures and performances for the public and private schools on the Island. As a founding member of the Washington State Arts Commission Consortium, BDC is one of the organizations on the island funded to continue these efforts.
